Grasshoppers, katydids, and crickets make up the group of insects known as Orthoptera. These are saltatorial (jumping) insects possessing chewing mouthparts. In addition, the males of most species produce sound by scrapping the hind femur against the tegmina (forewings)– most grasshoppers, or by scrapping one tegmen against the other– katydids and crickets. While only a few of the 181 orthopterans from the Dakotas are of economic importance, it is useful to be able to identify the others so as to allow the best allocation of economic resources. Identification is the key to information about any species.
