Herbal Uses and Medical Remedies

Herb gardens are not only an attractive addition to a garden, they are also very useful by definition. Merriam Webster's dictionary defines herbs as a plant or plant part valued for its medicinal, savory, or aromatic qualities. Here are a couple of uses and remedies for herbs.

Medical Remedies

Many herbs have properties are attributed with healing abilities. A couple of them include lavender and ginger.

Lavender’s origins as an herbal remedy come from Persia, Greece and Ancient Rome, where it was used as a popular bath additive.  Now, it is commonly steeped in a tea or used in aromatherapy for relief from anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, and depression. 


Many digestive, anti-nausea, and cold and flu dietary supplements contain ginger extract as an ingredient.  The rhizomes (or underground stems) of the ginger plant are powdered, juiced, or ground to creates everything from pills to tinctures.  A ginger honey tea is very efficient at easing the symptoms of nasal congestion. 


Ginger Honey Tea

(makes one large cup)

¼ teaspoon freshly ground ginger
1 ½ Tablespoon honey
2 cups boiling water

Combine all ingredients.  Stir and let steep for five minutes.  Sip carefully.


 

Herbal Uses

Perhaps the most prominent use of herbs is in the kitchen. Here are some of recipes for basil pesto and mint mojitos.


Basil Pesto

(makes one cup)

4 cups Fresh Basil leaves
¾ cup Parmesan Cheese
½ cup Pine Nuts
¾ cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
6 Garlic  Cloves

Combine all ingredients in a food processor until a loose paste is formed.  Adjust ingredient proportions as needed. 


Mint Mojotos

(makes one 12 oz. beverage)

6 Spearmint Leaves
½ Lime (sliced)
1 ½ oz. Simple Syrup
1 oz. Bacardi Limon (optional)
1 oz. Bacardi (optional)

Combine spearmint leaves, sliced limes, and simple syrup.  Muddle together and add Bacardi Limon and Bacardi. Fill with ice.  Fill with soda and shake.  Garnish with a mint sprig and enjoy.
