Step 1: Creating the right conditions for Corn
Once farmers have land they wish to farm on it is important that they create the right environment for the corn plants. It is important for a farmer to plow the land so there are not any large clumps. It is recommended that sweet corn be planted in a sandy loam soil with a pH of 5.5 and 7.0. (Australian government, Dep. Of Health and Ageing) Farmers sometime prefer to plant beans or another crop the year before corn because each plant requires different amounts of elements; the plants also contribute to the soil. For example, planting beans or peas the year before can contribute a healthy amount of nitrogen in the soil, exactly what the sweet corn needs. (buzzle.com)
