Step 2: Planting Corn
Once the farmer has organized his or her crop and has created the right planting conditions for the sweet corn they are ready to plant it. Farmers generally want to plan corn no earlier than a week after the last frost because corn is a summer crop. If they plant it too soon, the corn seeds could be damaged by the frost and the sweet corn may not grow. If they plant it too late, its flowering period could take place during the hottest time of the year in which the pollen can get damaged. If planted too late the corn could also mature late in the summer when it is wet and colder, these conditions would make it easy for the corn to catch disease which could lower its yield and quality. Farmers generally use large power-seeding tractors which makes planting a large amount of seeds over many acres much easier. These seeders automatically dig rows approximately 15-30 inches apart with fertilizer only 2 inches away from the seed. (Ehow.com)
