Identification key to the Notodontidae occurring in the Dakotas

4A2.  (4A)   Forewing gray, transverse lines marked by shading and by patches of yellow scales at veins.
        Furcula cinerea (Walker).

4A2.'  Forewing with transverse lines dark and contrasting, with sparse yellow scales only.
        Furcula occidentalis (Lintner).

Note- occasional specimens of F. occidentalis have a white ground color; their very large terminal spots and less contrasting
head/thorax will still separate them from other pale Furcula: F. borealis, F. scolopendrina, and F. modesta.
