Cloning Committment to Flowering and Flower Organ Genes

Cloning of the Arabidopsis genes involved in the committment to flowering and the genes controlling flower organ development has been achieved by either heterologous probing with snapdragon genes or by transposon tagging. In general, sequence analysis of these genes suggests they can be classified as a MADS-box containing gene or a gene with another structure. The following table is a summary of the genes, how they were cloned and type of gene structure the contain.

Cloning Methods and Basic Structure of Genes Involved in Flowering
Gene Cloning Method Sequence Structure
LEAFY flo probe Unique
APETALA1 MADS-Box Cloning MADS-box
CAULIFLOWER APETALA1 probe MADS-box
AGAMOUS T-DNA Tagging MADS-box
APETALA3 DEFICIENS A probe MADS-box
PISTILLATA GLOBOSA probe MADS-box
APETALA2 T-DNA Tagging Unique
