Description

'Autumn Brilliance' is a cultivar of the hybrid known as apple serviceberry, a cross between A. laevis and A. canadensis.  A short tree, it is related to our native juneberry and has many of the same characteristics, though flowers are larger and have a slight pink tinge at the beginning of the season.  Fall color may be yellow, orange, red, or some combination of these depending on soil type.  Some authors list as being hardy to Zone 3 while others list hardiness to Zone 4.

Preferences

Light: Full sun to partial shade.
Water: Medium water needs.
Soil: Tolerant of a wide variety of soils.

Comments

Attractive understory tree/shrub for lawns, shrub borders, woodland margins or native plant areas.

Shrub forms can be grown as tall informal hedges or screens.

Good plant for bird gardens (birds love the berries).
