A dense tall shrub with stout ascending branches. This species blooms later than the common lilac. Lavender-pinkish flowers fade to gray-white. Does not sucker. Native to China.

Preferences

Light: Full sun for best flowering.
Water: Medium water use.
Soil: Prefers loose, well drained soils; somewhat pH adaptable and tolerates high pH.

Comments

Unlike the common lilac, the late lilac blooms on this year’s growth, typically in late May to early June.

A nice lilac for a shrub border with a bushy, dense rounded habit and stiff stout branches. Useful in shelterbelts and other conservation plantings.

Benefits from rejuvenation pruning as the plant ages to clear out old wood and bring new growth.
