Description

A small, short-lived tree that is native to many of the forests of Minnesota and further east. Called "pagoda" dogwood because its branching structure gives an overall tree form that is reminiscent of a pagoda. Interesting landscaping characteristics include showy white flowers, and dark purple fruits on red fruit stalks. Can tolerate partial shade. Fall color variable, ranging from yellow with some reddish-purple, to a true burgundy color. Can be a single-stemmed tree, but often has multiple trunks coming up together.

Preferences

Light: Full sun to part shade.
Water: Medium.
Soil: Best in acidic, well drained.

Comments

For best performance of pagoda dogwood maintain consistent soil moisture. Common name is in reference to the tiered horizontal branching. Also known as alternate leaf dogwood.
