Description

A broad pyramidal cultivar that is more dense and rounded than the species American arborvitae. Native to the Eastern United States and Minnesota, this evergreen has scale-like, aromatic yellowgreen to green foliage that appears in flattened sprays. Very resistant to winter burn or drying winds. Merits much greater use in the Northern Plains. The largest tree in North Dakota is 18 feet tall with a canopy spread of 17 feet.

Preferences

Light: Full sun to partial shade.
Water: Grows in average, moist soils.
Soil: Neutral to alkaline soils.

Comments

Relatively low maintenance tree, handles pruning well, makes a good hedge or specimen plant. Siberian arborvitae has few pest or disease issues in North Dakota.
