Description

A large, loose, open-spreading native shrub with a flattish crown. Usually grows in masses and suckers profusely. Outstanding red fall color. Similar to staghorn sumac but shorter.

Preferences

Light: Full sun to partial shade.
Water: Moderately drought tolerant. Water availability determines mature plant height.
Soil: Adaptable to a wide variety of soils.

Comments

Best when used in masses to stabilize embankments or for hard-tocover areas with poor soil. Has nice ornamental characteristics but may be too weedy for most locations.

There are some varieties available in the nursery industry including:

‘Lanciniata’- Has leaflets which are deeply cut and lobed. A female variety which produces bright red fruits.
