Sustainable/organic agriculture tour set at NDSU’s Carrington Research Extension Center

Organic crop production is the focus of a tour being held during the North Dakota State University Carrington Research Extension Center’s (NDSU CREC) annual field day on July 16.

The sustainable/organic agriculture tour is one of several tours offered during the field day. Additional tours offered are agronomy, northern hardy fruit and beef production.

"Sustainable agriculture encompasses a wide range of crop production practices, including organic methods, which are profitable, environmentally sound, and beneficial to the community,” comments NDSU Extension agent Jeff Gale. 

Gale continued, “During this year’s sustainable/organic tour we’ve chosen to highlight the opportunities and challenges farmers face when raising row crops organically."

The tour will start with an overview of the organic research program at the CREC before delving into various aspects of organic practices, covering topics such as equipment, weed control, and harvest techniques. 

The tour’s speakers include experienced row crop farmers with the Organic Academy Roadshow, along with staff from the National Center for Appropriate Technology.

The CREC's 65th annual field day begins at 9 a.m. with registration, coffee and a welcome. The tours will depart at 9:30 a.m. and continue until noon with lunch provided.

The sustainable/organic tour is organized by Gale, NDSU Extension agent Lindy Berg, and NDSU Extension livestock specialist Karl Hoppe. The three individuals serve as co-coordinators of the North Dakota Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program.
