The annual NDSU homecoming tradition is an opportunity for students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members to reconnect with campus and celebrate the university.
This year, Kaylee Weigel, a microbiological sciences graduate student from Alexandria, Minnesota, is leaving her mark on the event. She designed the annual t-shirt distributed by NDSU Student Government.
Weigel pulled inspiration from the 2023 Homecoming theme, ‘All Roads Lead Home,’ and used two iconic NDSU landmarks in her design: the main NDSU gates and the Bison Statue.
“I was really inspired by the theme, “All Roads Lead Home,” and the parade being on campus this year,” Weigel said. “I wanted to incorporate something about campus into the design of the shirt. The easiest thing that I thought of was the iconic NDSU gates.”
Weigel picked up graphic design as a hobby in high school. She taught herself how to use Adobe Illustrator and designed projects for her high school’s DECA chapter.
NDSU Student Government wanted to connect to the student body in this year’s homecoming t-shirt design. They asked students and alumni to submit artwork. The final design was selected by representatives from student government and the NDSU Homecoming Committee.
Weigel said she is looking forward to the week ahead and celebrating not only with students, but also NDSU supporters like alumni and others in the community. Weigel serves as NDSU’s student body president. She’s most excited for the annual Homecoming Parade’s return to NDSU’s campus.
“Homecoming is about tradition and Bison Pride,” she said. “I think this year, it’s going to be one of the most vibrant homecoming weeks.”
Homecoming shirts will be available for purchase in-person starting Monday, Sept. 25, in the Memorial Union. Shirts are $5 and will be on sale while supplies last.
