The temperature is 35 degrees and the sun is shining down on the frozen Red River. This is the first taste of spring after a cold winter and students are making the most of the uplifting weather.
Freshmen roommates Andrea Hawbaker and Jessie Hale glide through the snowy trails as part of the Outdoor Adventures cross-country ski excursion offered by the NDSU Wellness Center.
Hawbaker and Hale heard about the trip through fliers distributed outside the dining center.
“We were like, let’s do that.” said Hawbaker, a dietetics major from Parker, Colorado.
Outdoor Adventures is the perfect way to stay active and explore what the Fargo-Moorhead area in every season. The program offers equipment rentals throughout the year and has planned outings for students.
“If you’ve never done any winter sport before, cross-country skiing would definitely be a good way to start,” Hawbaker said.
“It’s a good way to see the area, too,” said Hale, a biology student from Kinney Lake, Alaska.
In addition to cross-country skis, the Wellness Center offers snowshoes, ice skates and camping equipment throughout the winter. During the summer, hiking equipment, kayaks, canoes and inline skates are among their catalog of equipment.
Hawbaker and Hale said they definitely would do an Outdoor Adventures trip again.
“It’s the perfect opportunity be outside, hang out and try something new,” Hale said.
