Senior political science major Taylor Spreeman had a memorable and educational experience last summer in the nation’s capital as a congressional intern for Minnesota Seventh District Rep. Collin Peterson.
“I was immersed in the Washington, D.C., political culture, while also having the satisfaction of working on issues that impact constituents from the Red River Valley,” said Spreeman of West St. Paul, Minnesota. “I gained new connections, valuable skills and truly got to see democracy in action. I was also able to grow and develop as a young adult and activist.”
Her specific role was tracking and researching organizational support, opposition and vote recommendations on more than 400 amendments during the Fiscal Year 2020 Omnibus Appropriations session.
Spreeman also gave frequent tours of the capitol building and sat in the U.S. House of Representatives’ chambers as business was conducted. She witnessed the 4th of July fireworks from the grandstand.
“With this hands-on experience and several valuable NDSU public policy classes, I’m ready to graduate and join a campaign or shape legislative policy at the state and federal level,” said Spreeman, who graduates in May and hopes to return to Washington, D.C., to work in politics.
Spreeman has developed leadership and organizational skills through several events, clubs and student organizations at NDSU. All of it has prepared her for a successful career. “I've gained valuable knowledge through various political science courses and involvement,” said Spreeman. “I feel prepared to enter the workforce and take position.”
