Welcome to the Instructional Design Center

The IT Instructional Design Center (IDC) offers instructional design service that pairs instructors with an instructional designer (ID) and an academic technologist (AT) to enhance course development. The IDs focus on pedagogical strategies, course design, and accessibility, while ATs assist with the integration of educational technologies. Additionally, student employees develop resources to help faculty create accessible materials, organize multimedia content, and specialized course resources such as lab videos. These students also assist their peers with course projects, providing technical support and valuable feedback that is relayed to faculty through established ID and AT partnerships.

Faculty Experiences With Us

NDSU’s Instructional Design Center (IDC) has proven to be invaluable helping me to integrate technology into my coursework by offering technical expertise.

During the time I was transitioning to Ultra, the IDC staff were available on a timely basis to address many technical issues. Their support has enabled me to effectively leverage Ultra’s features, leading to more interactive and impactful learning environments for my students.

NDSU IDC services go beyond help with Ultra. It plays a crucial role in enhancing the quality of teaching and learning by providing expertise, support, and training on various digital tools and platforms, guide faculty in designing accessible and engaging online or blended learning experiences and assist with multimedia creation. This support is very important to faculty who want to leverage technology effectively so they can more effectively interact with their students.

Lori and the team at IDC were absolutely essential to my successful setup for my first semester teaching at NDSU. Lori was consistently available and incredibly knowledgeable when it came to the processes for setting up my classroom technology. Her experience with faculty and the educational framework made her advice exceptionally practical and useful. She also checked in throughout the semester, which was perfect for helping me stay on track with various aspects of the course design. Lori provided excellent support in navigating the security screening process and effectively translated complex IT information into easily understandable terms.

Jeanne Frenzel was nominated by Lisa Richter, who shared the following about her work:

"This month's award winner implemented groundbreaking alternative assessment methods that significantly improved student outcomes in pharmacy education. The innovative approach included revise-and-resubmit assignments, purposeful peer and instructor feedback, and self-reflection opportunities designed to replace traditional grading practices.
The two-year study confirmed that transitioning from traditional to alternative grading strategies creates a more supportive learning environment that enhances both academic achievement and student self-efficacy.

Student & Staff Experiences With Us

A few weeks ago, I visited the Instructional Design Center to use Camtasia to edit two items. Emily, a Student IT Services student employee, assisted me from start to finish. Emily was patient as I had no previous experience with Camtasia and kind when I made several mistakes and had to start over. I was impressed by Emily’s knowledge and gracious demeanor. If I need to utilize Instructional Design Center services in the future, I hope I am lucky enough to again work with Emily.
