Ganapathy Mahalingam, NDSU professor of architecture, recently published his latest book, “The Blinking Drum,” which is the ninth book Mahalingam has written.
In “The Blinking Drum,” the depth of the connection between the Shaiva traditions of India and the Taoist tradition are explored. The book will be used in a seminar Mahalingam is teaching this semester on non-western traditions in architecture and will allow his students to acquire a world view different from their own, Mahalingam said.
“This will help students study the Architecture of India in its philosophical context in my seminar,” he said.
Mahalingam has worked at NDSU for 30 years, bringing a wealth of knowledge and skills to aspiring architecture students. He served as the Interim Chair of the Department of Architecture and Landscape Architecture from 2008 to 2012, and as the Architecture Program Director from 2002 to 2008. Mahalingam teaches the Design Thesis Studio, the Advanced Architectural Design Studio and seminar courses on The Acoustical Experience of Spaces and the Architecture of India.
Mahalingam’s interests are philosophy, architectural design, computational modeling, poetry, music, art, food and travel.
Mahalingam’s previous books are: The Ashes of Spent Affirmations: fond reflections on a personal Shiva; A Forehead Blow: an anthology of verse; Tractatus Architectus in Two Hundred Tweets; A Catharsis of Creative Cathexes: Prelude to a Rebirth; Ashtastambha: Eight Pillars of Hindutva for the 21th Century; Annie and Andy’s Architectural Adventure: Building the City of Imagination; A Guide to the Design Thesis in Architecture; Bit by Brick: Computing Architectural Design.
