Four NDSU Agronomy Club students received awards during the 2014 International Annual Meeting of the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, and Soil Science Society of America in Long Beach, California.
Jodi Boe, a senior majoring in crop and weed sciences, took first place in the Collegiate Crops Judging contest. In the event, contestants compete in plant and seed identification, commercial grain grading and seed analysis.
The Agronomy Club placed second in the Quiz Bowl team event. Team members included Boe; Justin Zahradka, a junior majoring in crop and weed sciences; John Breker, a senior majoring in soil science; and Nevada Turbiville, a senior majoring in crop and weed sciences. In Quiz Bowl, four-member teams earn points by answering questions on agronomy, crops, soils, plant science and environmental science.
The Agronomy Club is advised by Kirk Howatt, crop and weed sciences undergraduate coordinator and associate professor in weed science.
More than 4,000 scientists, professionals, educators and students attended the annual meeting, including 370 undergraduate students. The undergraduate student program of the three societies, known as Students of Agronomy, Soils, and Environmental Sciences, held their annual meeting concurrent with the larger meeting.
