Masculinities expert Tal Peretz is scheduled to present “What Counts at Feminism Today?: Black, Muslim and Gay/Queer Men’s Gender Justice Activism" Thursday, March 26, at 12:15 p.m. in the Memorial Union Hidatsa Room.
The NDSU Women and Gender Studies program is sponsoring the presentation. All are invited to attend.
Peretz will draw on a year of fieldwork with two very different Atlanta-area men's gender justice groups: Muslim Men Against Domestic Violence and the Sweet Tea Southern Queer Men's Collective.
"I use them as case studies to consider recent trends in the feminist movement – notably the increasing inclusion of men as a major feminist constituency, the mainstreaming of intersectionality in on-the-ground organizing and the proliferation of new strategies of organizing through the use of new technologies," Peretz explained, noting the talk is a preview of a presentation he will give at the Pacific Sociological Association annual meeting. "I use these trends as an entry point to consider what feminism looks like today, and where it may be moving in the future."
Peretz has studied men’s anti-sexist and anti-violence activism for more than 10 years. He earned a doctorate in sociology and gender studies at the University of Southern California. He has written the upcoming book, "Some Men: Feminist Allies and the Movement to End Violence Against Women" with Michael Messner and Max Greenberg. In addition, he is a contributor to the blog Mascuinities101.com, giving advice for men’s groups trying to ally with women in working for gender justice.
