The NDSU Department of Plant Sciences is scheduled to host a yard and garden field day Tuesday, July 21, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. to celebrate horticultural research at the university.
The field day will showcase the All-America Selections bedding plant display garden and the NDSU Historic Daylily Garden with walking tours. The daylily garden is an official display garden of the American Hemerocallis Society and features more than 1,400 daylily cultivars.
"This is the largest public daylily collection in the nation," says Esther McGinnis, Extension Service horticulturist and assistant professor. "The collection should be in peak bloom for the field day."
The gardens are part of the NDSU Horticulture Research and Demonstration Gardens at the corner of 18th Street and 12th Avenue North in Fargo. Free parking will be available.
The field day also will feature a campus tree walk at 6:30 p.m. Todd West, associate professor and head of the NDSU Woody Plant Improvement research program, will lead the walk.
"The beautiful campus tree walk is a wonderful opportunity to learn new tree species," McGinnis says.
New this year, the field day will include a guided trailer tour of NDSU campus plots that highlights research on blackberries, grapes, vegetables and turfgrass.
In addition, NDSU faculty will teach sessions under a big tent on growing apples in North Dakota, planting a succulent centerpiece, weed control in lawns and turf establishment.
