Work is rapidly progressing on NDSU’s STEM Classroom and Lab Building in anticipation of a completion date in early December. STEM is the commonly used term for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The first classes in the new building are scheduled for January 2016.
While most windows are in place, the building is anticipated to be entirely enclosed in October.
Some recent construction highlights include:
• Walls are being installed for the student study rooms on the building's first floor.
• The 300-seat auditorium on the first floor has walls in place.
• The second floor hallway's flooring is completed, doors are being installed and the ceiling grid is in.
• Environmental rooms, which are walk-in freezers, were recently installed in the second-floor Movable Table Lab prep area.
• More casework, fume hoods and cabinetry are being installed in the H-8 (eight fume hoods) lab on third floor. Shower/eye wash stations and fire extinguisher boxes are in place.
• Fume hoods and cabinetry are being installed in the H-2 (two fume hoods) labs on the third floor.
• The building's west side elevator is being installed.
• Lights, ceiling and exterior baseboard heat have been installed in the Active Learning Classroom on the third floor. The room is awaiting carpet. Motorized screens also have been installed.
• Work is moving forward on the outdoor patio/seating area located between the STEM Building and Memorial Union. Trees have been planted, pavers are being installed and the concrete work is on going.
The state-of-the-art instruction building is being constructed to address the classroom and laboratory needs of NDSU students. Spaces in the building will be devoted exclusively to labs and traditional science and engineering classrooms as well as modular “open frame” flexible classrooms that will seat a variety of class sizes.
