The Northern Plain Ethics Institute at NDSU has announced the publication of its seventh annual issue of the Northern Plains Ethics Journal, known as the NPEJ. The journal is the first and only peer-reviewed ethics and philosophy journal in North Dakota.
The publication’s mission is to create a high-quality, dedicated platform to promote democratic participation in social and ethical issues affecting the Northern Plains and elsewhere.
“The NPEJ’s unique structure of scholar, community, and student sections allows readers to engage with thoughtful critical reasoning and creative thinking from each of those communities,” said Dennis Cooley, institute director and professor of philosophy and ethics. “The 2019 issue includes contributions addressing sports and ethics, genetic engineering future generations and biocentrism.”
In the issue, Hans Geissler, Commander of FGS Hessen (Class 124 Air Defense Frigate), examines the ethical issues raised by artificial intelligence advances in warfare. Geissler’s article is his revised master’s degree thesis from the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island.
The journal’s 2019 issue may be accessed for free or purchased through Kindle at Amazon.com. Back issues also are available.
The journal’s editorial board welcomes submissions focusing on ethical issues affecting the Northern Plains for the journal’s 2020 issue. Articles need not focus solely upon the United States’ Northern Plains, but the ethical issues addressed should be relevant to the region. Submissions may be sent as an email attachment to dennis.cooley@ndsu.edu.
