Verlin Hinsz, professor of psychology, is featured in a newly-published WalletHub.com article. The story, “Best and Worst Cities for Keeping Your New Year’s Resolutions” by financial writer Adam McCann, suggests location plays a role in keeping resolutions.
In the story, Fargo is listed as 31st among the best cities for keeping resolutions.
Hinsz was one of three experts from across the country interviewed for the story.
He was asked:
• What tips do you have for people looking to improve their financial habits in the new year?
• Why do so many people fail to keep their new year’s resolutions? What can they do to increase their odds of success?
• Does the phrasing of “New Year’s Resolutions” deter people from making them? How else can we refer to them?
According to the story, Hinsz offers this advice: “Establish direct deposit of funds to retirement accounts. Feel good about what you are doing for your future. Live well by living well within your means. Set financial goals that are specific, achievable, that one can fulfill, and get committed to those goals.”
Hinsz earned his bachelor’s degree at NDSU, and his master’s degree and doctorate from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
His research concentrates on social and organizational psychology, with a focus on applied cognition of groups and teams, small group processes and performance, group and individual judgement and decision, work motivation, goal setting and organizational behavior.
