Daniel J. Klenow, professor of emergency Management gave a presentation at the annual summit for the Naval Postgraduate School’s Center for Homeland Security and Defense on Nov. 4.
The presentation, titled “Integrating Pandemic and COVID-19 Content into Emergency Management and Homeland Security Courses and Textbooks: Exploring the Options,” provides frameworks for filling pandemic and COVID-19 knowledge gaps.
“Although public health professionals have been aware of and written about the range of global pandemic threats, awareness levels have been much lower in homeland security and national security circles,” Klenow said. “Current textbooks and courses need to incorporate preparedness and response content regarding pandemics. This is essential so students are up to speed on the current threat environment as evidenced with our current COVID-19 situation.”
The presentation also included data gathered from NDSU students regarding their perceived knowledge gaps regarding the current COVID-19 pandemic.
Klenow joined the NDSU faculty in 1976. He earned his bachelor’s degrees in philosophy and sociology from the University of Minnesota-Duluth, master’s degree in sociology at the University of Toledo and doctorate in sociology from the University of Notre Dame.
