Toy Adaptathon to be held at NDSU

NDSU Disability Services, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Eta Kappa Nu Honor Society and the NDSU Fabrication Lab are partnering to make the holiday season more accessible for all children.

The second-annual Toy Adaptathon is scheduled for November and December. The event adapts toys for children with physical and motor disabilities.

“Our goal through the Toy Adaptathon is to make toys accessible to all,” said Mark Coppin, NDSU Disability Services director. “A good example of a toy that can be adapted is any plush toy where you squeeze a foot or hand to create a reaction. Toys with joysticks or motion sensors typically aren’t able to be adapted, but check with us and we will let you know.”

Parents, families and friends of children with physical and motor disabilities are encouraged to bring their switch-activated toys to NDSU’s Main Library. They can leave toys at the front desk, along with a name and contact information so that the toy can be returned to the correct owner when finished. The deadline to drop off a toy is Dec. 3.

Donations from the public also are requested for families who cannot afford switch-activated toys for their children. To make a toy or monetary donation, email ndsu.disability.services@ndsu.edu.

NDSU also encourages suggestions for any child in need of an adapted toy.

As a student-focused, land-grant, research university, we serve our citizens.
