NDSU softball senior pitcher Paige Vargas and sophomore outfielder Emilee Buringa were named to the 2022 Summit League Softball Academic All-League Team, the league office announced June 8.
Vargas becomes a repeat winner of the award, as she also won it in 2020. Buringa was named to the team for the first time.
Vargas, who was a Second Team All-Summit League selection this season for the second time in her career, has a 3.80 grade-point average in exercise science. The Mission Viejo, California, native made 32 appearances the Bison in her senior season, posting a 16-10 record with a 2.21 earned run average.
Buringa, who also earned Second Team All-Summit League honors this season after starting every game in centerfield for NDSU, has a 4.0 GPA in education. The St. Charles, Minnesota, native also was voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team in May. The sophomore finished the season with a .298 batting average, seven home runs, 37 RBIs and a team high 44 runs.
To be eligible for the Academic All-League team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.30, completed at least one full academic year at the current institution and participated in 50% of their team's competitions, except pitchers who must have participated in 20% of their team’s total contests.
Nominations are made by sports information directors from the league's participating members, and voting is conducted by both sports information directors and faculty athletic representatives. The team is made up of 10 student-athletes receiving the most votes with all ties standing.
