NDSU plant sciences adds faculty member

Shahidul Islam has joined the NDSU plant sciences department as an assistant professor leading the spring wheat quality research program.

Islam earned his bachelor’s degree in agriculture and masters in horticulture from Bangladesh Agricultural University. He completed a doctorate in the School of Plant Biology at the University of Western Australia under an international fellowship. He also has recently been named an adjunct associate professor at Murdoch University in West Australia.

Islam’s research interests include cereal protein chemistry, wheat grain and end-product quality, plant nitrogen use efficiency, food analytical chemistry, genetic improvement for food functionality and improving bread quality by adding alternate plant proteins. At NDSU he will teach the course Fundamentals of Flour Testing and Baking and present lectures in cereal technology and advanced cereal and food chemistry.
