The ground is falling!

Here we have what is called slumping. The ground here is very loosely held together as it is made up of sands and gravels, which as I've said is the type of earth that holds water very well. In the process of the water finding a place to go, it carries along with it part of the hill. Since this is occurring under the surface, the top soil ends up collapsing down. The hill is, in effect, being reduced from the inside out.

 As you can see, the hill here has caved in quite a bit over the last several thousand years.
