A Key to the superfamilies of the Lepidoptera
with special reference to North and South Dakota


Two synapomorphies (shared derived characters) that unite the Pyraloidea are the possession of tympanal organs at the base of the abdomen and scales on the proboscis

Family Crambidae

Crambidae, praecinctorium present at base of abdomen, vein Rs4 of fw usually arising from discal cell and not stalked with Rs2+3 unless wing pattern is longitudinal.  World wide about 11,600 species, more than 850 in North America.

    Pyralidae, abdomen with praecinctorium absent, vein Rs4 of fw stalked with Rs 2+3,
    forewing pattern usually transverse. World wide about 6,100 species, at least 565 in
    North America.
