Plant Science Students Receive First Place Awards
North Dakota State University Department of Plant Sciences graduate students received first place awards for their oral presentations during 2025 Western Society of Weed Science (WSWS) Meetings held March 10-13 in Seattle, WA.
- Hayden Lee, M.S. student from Velva, ND, received first place, oral presentation in the Basic Biology, Ecology, and Technology Section of WSWS for his presentation of Dose Response of Tolpyralate and Bromoxynil on Weedy Grasses and Green Foxtail (Setatia viridis) Resistance Management. Lee is advised by Dr. Kirk Howatt, associate professor, and they would both like to thank Corteva Agriscience for partial funding of this research.
- Waqas Ahmad, Ph.D. candidate from Pakistan, received first place, oral presentation in the Weeds of Horticultural Crops Section of WSWS for his presentation of Hydromulches Reduce Weed Pressure in Organic Broccoli Production. Ahmad is advised by Dr. Greta Gramig, professor, and they both wish to thank USDA-NIFA Organic Research and Extension Initiative program for funding this research.
The Western Society of Weed Science was originally established as the Western Weed Control Conference and had its first annual meeting in Denver in 1938. In 1968, the Society renamed Western Society of Weed Science (WSWS). WSWS objectives include fostering and encouraging education and research in weed science, fostering cooperation among state, federal, and private agencies in matters of weed science, and supporting commercial, private, and public agencies in finding weed management solutions.
