Spring Wheat Quality Specialist Joins Plant Sciences Faculty

Dr. Shahidul Islam has joined the North Dakota State Univesity Department of Plant Sciences as an assistant professor leading the spring wheat quality research program. 

Islam completed his B.Sc. in Agriculture and M.Sc. in Horticulture from Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU). He completed a Ph.D. in the School of Plant Biology, University of Western Australia (UWA) under an international fellowship. He has also recently been named an Adjunct Associate Professor at Murdoch University in West Australia.

Islam’s research interests include cereal protein chemistry, wheat grain and end-product quality, plant nitrogen use efficiency, food analytical chemistry, genetic improvement for food functionality and improving bread quality by adding alternate plant proteins. At NDSU he will teach Fundamentals of Flour Testing and Baking (CFS 758) and present lectures in Cereal Technology (CFS 450/650) and Advanced Cereal and Food Chemistry (CFS765).

Islam and his family enjoy traveling and look forward to learning about the U.S. midwest. He says he will miss the beaches of Australia but has heard there are beautiful lakes in North Dakota and Minnesota to explore.
