What it takes to be an engineer or construction manager.

Our graduates apply their skills in all fields of the profession at companies around the region, country and world. Our curriculum is designed to give you a strong mathematical, scientific and engineering background in all areas of the field, while allowing you to choose elective courses from several concentrations.

Problem Solving

In general, engineers and construction managers are people who enjoy the challenge of solving problems and working with people as part of a team. An aptitude for math and science is helpful, but just as important is an ability to work with other people, to speak and write well, and to demonstrate leadership skills.

Teamwork

Engineers and construciton managers work in teams with other engineers, technicians, and office staff. They may also work with economists, social scientists, geologists, biologists, chemists, and many other professionals. Civil, construction and environmental engineers and constuction managers also often work with the general public.

Communication

Many projects are publicly funded, and require public input, such as meetings and hearings. This means the engineers and construction managers must learn to clearly communicate technical information to clients and the general public, learn to think on their feet, and keep their cool under pressure.

Faculty Spotlight

Work with the best in their field.

Kalpana Katti, University Distinguished Professor of civil and environmental engineering, was recently named Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science for her groundbreaking contributions to engineering and biomaterials.

Our students have the unique opportunity of learning from the very best at NDSU, and this is a source of immense pride for us.

Making the World Better

Research is at the heart of our department, offering students the chance to work alongside faculty on projects that address real-world challenges in infrastructure, sustainability, and emerging technologies. From improving water quality and designing resilient transportation systems to advancing smart construction materials and leveraging AI in structural monitoring, our research spans a wide range of impactful areas.

Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to get involved early—gaining valuable hands-on experience, contributing to published work, and preparing for advanced careers or further study. Our strong partnerships with industry and government agencies also provide unique opportunities to work on collaborative, high-impact projects that make a difference locally and globally.
