I-20 Extensions

ELIGIBILITY: If an F-1 student needs to remain in an educational program beyond the date originally estimated for completion of the program, the student must apply for a program extension. This application must be made within 30 days of the completion date on the original I-20. An F-1 student is eligible for program extension if he or she has (1) continually maintained full-time status and (2) the delay in completion is caused by compelling academic or medical reasons, such as changes of major or research topics, unexpected research problems, or documented illnesses. Delays caused by academic probation or suspension are not acceptable reasons for a program extension. If a student does not complete the program within the time indicated on the I-20, and does not meet the eligibility criteria for a program extension, the student is considered out of status and must apply for reinstatement to student status.

The I-20 Extension Information Packet is found on our Forms page.

Attention Graduate students: Graduate tuition waivers may vary with regard to those programs that charge differential tuition rates, so please check with the department if you have questions.

For J-1 Students: If you need to request an extension of your DS-2019, please make an appointment to see an advisor in the Office of International Student and Study Abroad Services.

DS-2019 Extensions

In certain situations, J-1 students can apply to extend their DS-2019.

If your DS-2019 is issued by NDSU: Please check with your home institution or financial sponsor to make sure a program extension is allowed. If you are an undergraduate student, please consult with your international student advisor first, before applying for a DS-2019 extension. If allowed, please fill out this form, and our office will be in contact after you have submitted it.

The DS-2019 Extension Information Packet is found on our Forms page.

If your DS-2019 is issued by another organization: Please check with your sponsor to make sure a program extension is allowed. If allowed, you may go ahead and request the extension through your sponsor - please notify your international student advisor when you have requested it so we can help monitor your situation if needed. When your program has been extended and you receive your new DS-2019, please provide the ISSAS office with a copy of your new DS-2019.

For any questions regarding this process, please contact your international student advisor.
