Optional Practical Training (OPT)
About OPT
There are two types of OPT:
- Pre-completion OPT: You may participate in pre-completion OPT after you have been lawfully enrolled on a full-time basis for one full academic year. If you are authorized to participate in pre-completion OPT, you may work 20 hours or less per week while school is in session. You may work full time during official break periods.
- Post-completion OPT: You may participate in post-completion OPT after completing your coursework. If you are authorized for post-completion OPT, you must work part time (at least 20 hours per week) or full time.
All OPT must be directly related to your major area of study.
How to Apply
Step 1: Attend an OPT info session or meet with your international student advisor.
Step 2: Complete the OPT Request form with your academic advisor.
Step 3: Receive your I-20 with OPT recommendation.
Step 4: Submit the I-765 application to USCIS within 30 days.
Step 5: Wait for USCIS approval and your EAD card.
Responsibilities
Students are required to report the following changes to both SEVP and ISS for the duration of OPT:
- name
- home and mailing address
- phone number
- employment information
Changes must be reported within 10 days of occurence.
