College of Engineering holds scholarship and awards celebration

The NDSU College of Engineering held its seventh annual Scholarship and Awards Reception on Sept. 29 in the NDSU Memorial Union Oċet̄i Ṡak̄owiɳ Ballroom. The event was a celebration of student scholarship recipients, scholarship donors and faculty and staff award winners.

Central to NDSU’s land-grant mission is a dedication to providing affordable access to a world-class education through a variety of need-based and merit-based awards that help pay for tuition and other costs.

Thanks to generous gifts from donors, the College of Engineering was able to award students more than $2.5 million in 2024. Scholarship money not only helps cover the cost of college, it allows students more time to enhance their NDSU experience.

“Along with being a renowned engineering school, what I consider the perfect distance from home, and a community with great pride in its school and people, NDSU’s aid through scholarships solidified my decision in saying yes to choosing NDSU,” said Brenna Solheid, a mechanical engineering senior and scholarship recipient from New Prague, MN. “Having received scholarships freshman year, I was able to focus solely on school and forming connections. This allowed me to excel in my studies and form learning habits that I continue to use today.”

Scholarships are awarded to incoming and current students. The winners are selected by the office of admissions and college or department scholarship committees based on criteria established by donors for each scholarship.

“I can attest that a degree from the NDSU College of Engineering can be a magic ticket if you’re up to the challenge,” said scholarship donor Nick Borman, ’84 BS Mechanical Engineering. “Sponsoring an endowment for scholarships provides people like us, who are grateful for what this degree has enabled us to achieve, to invest in students who can make a meaningful, positive difference in the world.”

The NDSU College of Engineering is the largest contributor to the engineering and computer science workforce in North Dakota, and its graduates are making a difference around the state, region and world.

“We’ve made it our mission to prepare highly-skilled, career-ready engineers, computer scientists and construction managers and scholarships play a key role in attracting and retaining the students to meet North Dakota’s workforce needs,” said Alan Kallmeyer, interim dean of the College of Engineering.

Information about scholarships for current and incoming students, along with suggestions and resources which may aid in the scholarship search and application process can be found online.
