NDSU biological sciences assistant professor Giancarlo Lopez-Martinez presented on the major accomplishments and contributions of Latinx men and women in the biological sciences at the Anishinaabe Theater on Oct. 15, as part of Multicultural Programs' event to close Hispanic Heritage Month.

This year’s national theme, “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together,” celebrates trailblazers who have paved the way for progress and innovation, and Lopez-Martinez’s presentation was a fitting tribute.

Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, he began with an anecdote about Major League Baseball legend Roberto Clemente. Recalling childhood memories of passing by Clemente's home, where he could see a baseball field in the yard, Lopez-Martinez spoke of his father's stories and passion for the sport. Using this connection, he creatively showcased the contributions of Latinx scientists on baseball cards, each featuring an image, biographical details, the position they played in the field of biological science, and their major achievements.

Lopez-Martinez’s engaging narrative kept the audience captivated from the first inning to the bottom of the ninth. Lopez-Martinez inspired attendees with a powerful tribute to Latinx excellence in science.
