Books published by the NDSU Press received literary awards during the summer.
“A Field Guide to Custer’s Camps: On the March to the Little Bighorn,” by Don Weinell, won two awards, including a Silver Medal in the Midwest Book Award competition for Nonfiction Recreation/Sports/Travel and the John Carroll Literary Award presented by the Little Big Horn Associates, a national nonprofit organization.
Prakash Mathew won a Midwest Book Awards prize, First Place (Gold Medal) in the Nonfiction Inspirational category for his book, “We Are Called...To Do the Right Thing: A Practical Guide for Leaders Based on Personal Reflections and Experience from a Longtime Education Leader.”
In addition, Bonnie Larson Staiger, author of “In Plains Sight,” is one of three finalists for a Women Writing the West Award, named the WILLA Literary Award, and she—along with Mark Vinz’s “The Trouble with Daydreams”—tied for second place in the Midwest Book Award for Regional Poetry.
Well-known regional and international photographer Wayne Gudmundson also was awarded a Midwest Book Award Silver Medal for his prose and photo collection “A Song for Liv” in the category of Nonfiction Arts/Photography/Coffee Table books.
“These are all terrific prizes to add to our growing list of award-winning titles,” said Suzzanne Kelley, NDSU Press editor-in-chief and associate professor of practice. “We have been stacking up prizes like cord wood. We’ll be basking in the glow throughout the winter months as we work on the production of our next batch of books.”
Giving the region a voice since 1950, NDSU Press publishes manuscripts in any fields of study that contribute to scholarly knowledge or the public consciousness of the Red River Valley, state of North Dakota, plains of North America and comparable regions of other continents. The NDSU Press addresses national and international topics with its Heritage Guide and Contemporary Voices of Indigenous Peoples series. In 2022, the Press launched its Little Book about North Dakota series. The NDSU Press is a teaching press, providing hands-on experience to the next generation of publishers.
