Above are some of the events and extra-curricular activities that take place in Theile's courses during the course of the semester. While the
RMMLA convention is an annual feature in fostering undergraduate education and professionalization, the remaining events are semester-specific, covering Fall 2006 primarily. Last year's
Honor Research Symposium, for example, which was inspired by Dr. Audrey Johnson's experience with teaching Honors English, took the place of midterm exams in Honor 199, allowing 19 honors students to present their research to a forum of peers and professionals.
Movie night has become a permanent fixture in and a vital component of all of Theile's undergraduate courses. Theile strongly believes in supplementing reading with cinematic representations, and she always tries to find visual forms of media that complement the literature discussed in class. While this effort was inspired by her teaching of Shakespeare and the obvious need of students to see what Shakespeare wanted them to see, movie night has been popular in her other courses as well. This semester her students have watched a wide variety of productions, ranging from an American adaptation of Max Frisch's
Homo Faber, entitled
Voyager, to a documentary about Edgar A. Poe and the Oscar-winning potrayal of Truman Capote's writing of
In Cold Blood, entitled
Capote.
