Biography
James Anthony Faris is a sculptor, writer, photographer and mixed media artist from Southeast Georgia living and working in Fargo, ND. Mr. Faris graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design with a BFA in Photography. In 2014, Mr. Faris completed his M.F.A. from Georgia Southern University in 3D Art. Mr. Faris is a co-founding member of the Stillmoreroots group: a rural arts advocacy group. He has worked in community development as Education and Outreach Director for Gallery RFD and Director of Downtown Develpment fro the City of Swainsboro. He currently serves as Gallery Coordinator and Curator of Collections for North Dakota State University. He also teaches the BFA Capstone, in Visual Arts, that is heavily focused on research, presentation and entrepreneurship.

Outside of art and design fields, what inspires you?
Podcasts like 99% Invisible, Books by Stephen Johnson, Travel, Storytelling, Cultural Anthropology
What do you wish you had known when you started out as a student/in this field?
I was told "Persistence is more important than Talent" by Sandy Skoglund and that was good advice. I wish I had been told that artists can be positively influenced by their research and that intuitive genius isn't a thing.
What was your most memorable meal?
One of my most memorable meals was when I was 17 and hosted a dinner in the woods for this girl I liked. There were a lot of mishaps. We got lost and a friend's father accidently ate the meal I'd gotten but it was indeed memorable.
In your office, you can only have three things, one book, one tool, and one picture. What would they be and why?
The dictionary, because I rely on language, a picture my students gave me of Georgia to remind me of stories, distance and home and measuring tape because as a curator, it helps me make order.
