Endorsements
Endorsements are additional credentials you can add to your North Dakota teaching license. The endorsements are awarded by the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction but NDSU offers online professional development classes that meet the criteria of the following endorsements.
Middle School Endorsement
The online Middle School Endorsement is satisfied by taking all four courses (ten semester hours) including 20 hours of applied experience. The courses for this endorsement are approved by the North Dakota Education Standards and Practices Board (ESPB).
These professional development classes for teachers are offered online. The EDUC 2000 classes required for this endorsement are professional development credit and are not eligible for use on a graduate program of study.

Reading in the Content Area
EDUC 2000 | 2 Credits
Introduction to the relevance and need for incorporating reading and developing reading skills in middle and high school classrooms. Understand how content literacy can contribute to the learning of content material and contribute to a positive learning environment in K-12 classrooms.
Adolescent Development
EDUC 2000 | 3 Credits
Understand the behaviors of students who are adolescents and emerging adults. Topics include social & emotional development, behavioral health, changing relationships with families, self & identity development, and the increasingly important role of peers. Explore this complex period of development through various lens such as trauma-informed; social,emotional (SEL); and social,emotional & cultural (SEC) competencies.

English Learner Endorsement
The English Learner (EL) Endorsement consists of 16-semester hours including 2-semester hours of field teaching experience. These courses are approved for use toward the North Dakota Education Standards and Practices Board (ESPB) EL Endorsement.
These professional development classes for teachers are offered online. The EDUC 2000 classes offered for this endorsement are professional development credit and are not eligible for use on a graduate program of study.

Methods of Teaching English as a Second Language

Prepares you for teaching second language acquisition. Focuses on using the Sheltered Instruction Operational Protocol (SIOP) to meet the needs of English learners' content classrooms.

Emphasizes understanding how students’ learning is influenced by individual experiences, talents, disabilities, gender, language, culture, family, and community values.
ELL: Evaluation & Assessment

Gain a better understanding of the concept of evaluating and assessing English language learners.
Intro to Linguistics: Phonology/Phonetics, Part 1
EDUC 2000 | 1 Credit
Study the anatomy of speech articulation, including place and manner of articulation of speech sounds. Learn basic patterns and sound systems within languages and the rules that govern them. Develop an understanding of International Phonetic Alphabet.
Intro to Linguistics: Morphology/Syntax, Part 2
EDUC 2000 | 1 Credit
Study the structure and function of pieces of words, as well as the structure and function of pieces of sentences. Learn about word roots and the affixes that attach to them. Develop an understanding of form and function of words within a sentence and identify sentence constituents.
Intro to Linguistics: Semantics/Pragmatics, Part 3

Study the variation in word meanings and the sets of characteristics that define a word's category, as well as the common implicit rules that guide verbal exchanges. Develop an understanding of conversational implicature. Learn about words that also mean their own opposite.
Socio/Psycho Linguistics: Guiding Principles of Linguistics, Part 4

Study the basic principles that govern the formal study of language. Learn how to apply guiding principles to all modules of linguistics.
Socio/Psycho Linguistics: Sociolinguistics, Part 5
EDUC 2000 | 1 Credit
Study social and regional factors that underly different varieties (dialects) of English. Study the patterns that govern social and regional varieties of English as well as identify the motivation behind attitudes about language variation. Recognize your role as a language gatekeeper.
Socio/Psycho Linguistics: Psycholinguistics, Part 6
EDUC 2000 | 1 Credit
Study how the human brain acquires, processes, and produces language. Learn about the development of bilingual speakers as well as the effects of specific types of brain damage on language speakers.
Field Experience: ESL Endorsement
EDUC 2000 | 2 Credits
Perform 60 hours of field experience and deliver two different lessons to English Learners. This course is taken toward the end of the ESL Endorsement coursework.
