The NDSU Press has announced that one of its publications, “Stringing Rosaries: The History, the Unforgivable, and the Healing of Northern Plains American Indian Boarding School Survivors,” by Denise K. Lajimodiere, is a finalist in the 22nd annual Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards.
Foreword Magazine Inc. hosts an annual awards program. The magazine’s editorial team determined the finalists from more than 2,000 individual titles across 55 genres that were submitted for consideration.
“When Dr. Lajimodiere, of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, brought her manuscript in for consideration, my co-editor, Michael Yellow Bird, and I knew instantly that the result of her decade-long project was perfect for our Contemporary Voices of Indigenous Peoples series,” said NDSU Press publisher Suzzanne Kelley. “We are elated to have Denise garner this deserved attention.”
“Stringing Rosaries” is up against challengers from Indiana University Press, SUNY Press, University of Notre Dame Press and Johns Hopkins University Press. “We are stunned to have our publication listed among such stellar university press finalists, but we are not surprised at all for Lajimodiere’s research and writing to be recognized as top notch,” Kelley said.
“To stand out among so many wonderful submissions, a book has to be exceptional,” said Forward Magazine managing editor Michelle Anne Schingler. “We’re proud to attach our names to each and every book selected as a finalist, and we’re eager to learn how the judges received these extraordinary picks.”
Winners will be decided by an expert team of booksellers and librarians, representing Foreword’s readership, from across the country. Honorees in each genre — along with Editor’s Choice Prize winners and Foreword’s INDIE Publisher of the Year — will be announced June 17.
“Stringing Rosaries” is also a finalist in the Multicultural category of the Independent Book Publishers Association’s Ben Franklin Book Award, which recognizes excellence and innovation in independent publishing. The Gold medalist for this category will be announced in May.
