James Rosenquist Artist Residency

SMITH NAMED JAMES ROSENQUIST ARTIST IN RESIDENCE 2013

September 20, 2012 – The Department of Visual Arts at North Dakota State University has announced Amy Smith, Lincoln, Nebraska, as the 2013 James Rosenquist Artist in Residence. Ms. Smith will work spring semester 2013 in the studio dedicated for the program at NDSU’s Downtown Visual Arts Department, interacting with students, holding public lectures, and opening her studio for visitors.

Ms. Smith works intuitively with porcelain, letting it guide her and allowing open forms to gently hold space. Her pieces invite the viewer to touch as they blend the relationship between wind and wave. She uses fluid glazes over carved surfaces, which encourages them to break, run and pool. At NDSU, Ms. Smith will teach a seminar course and her residency will culminate with an exhibition and donation of a piece of artwork to the James Rosenquist Artist Residency Collection. Ms. Smith holds a M.F.A. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and her B.F.A. at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. She was a Short Term Artist Residency at Red Lodge Clay Center, Red Lodge, Montana in addition to two Artist Invite Artist Residencies in 2009 and 2011. Smith exhibits her work at Modern Arts Midwest / Modern Arts Midtown and nationally including the “19th San Angelo National Ceramic Competition” in San Angelo, Texas; AKAR “Yunomi Invitational” in Iowa City, Iowa; and "Craftsmanship: Concept: Innovation" Red Lodge Clay Center's Inaugural Juried National in Red Lodge, MT.

The James Rosenquist Artist in Residency Program for Visual Arts at NDSU honors James Rosenquist. Born in Grand Forks, N.D., Rosenquist is considered one of the greatest living artists of the Pop Art movement of North America. His work and career are internationally known. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from North Dakota State University in May 2005.

NDSU introduced the James Rosenquist Artist in Residency program with sculptor Hedi Schwöbel, of Ludwigsburg, Germany. Additional participants include Jonathan Pellitteri, sculptor, 2008; Min Kim Park, multimedia performances, 2009; Michael Namkung, kinesthetic drawing, 2010; James Sham, video, 2011; Lori Larusso, painting, 2012.

January 17, 2012 - You're invited to meet Lori Larusso, our 2012 James Rosenquist Artist in Residence, and discover her ideas, techniques and artwork at an Artist Talk, Thursday, January 19 at 3:00 PM in Renaissance Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

LARUSSO NAMED 2012 JAMES ROSENQUIST ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

October 10, 2011 – The Department of Visual Arts at North Dakota State University has announced that Lori Larusso, Lexington, Kentucky, has been named the 2012 James Rosenquist Artist in Residence. Ms. Larusso will work spring semester 2012 in the studio dedicated for the program at NDSU’s Downtown Visual Arts Department, interacting with students, holding public lectures, and opening her studio for visitors.

Ms. Larusso uses as representations of generic and stereotypical middle-America in her paintings to remind the viewer of the culture one maintains on a daily basis. She uses this to explore the contradictions that exist in society’s system of beliefs by pointing to the complexity of individual situations. She believes ideals are reflections of the way one wishes things were, rather than the way they are actually experienced. At NDSU, Ms. Larusso will teach a seminar course and her residency will culminate with an exhibition and donation of a piece of artwork to the James Rosenquist Artist Residency Collection. Ms. Larusso holds a B.F.A. from the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning and a M.F.A. from the Maryland Institute College of Art’s graduate interdisciplinary program, the Mount Royal School of Art. She works in her community as an advocate for reproductive rights, a part-time professor of art, and maintains a solid studio practice. She exhibits her work locally, nationally, and internationally. In 2011, Ms. Larusso was awarded a Visual Artist Fellowship from the MacDowell Colony, the Kentucky Art Council’s Al Smith Fellowship, and was a Milton and Sally Avery Fellow for 2010-11.

INTERDISCIPLINARY ARTIST NAMED JAMES ROSENQUIST ARTIST IN RESIDENCE FOR 2011

January 19, 2011 – Fargo, ND - The Department of Visual Arts at North Dakota State University has announced that James Sham, Houston, TX, has been named the 2011 James Rosenquist Artist in Resident at NDSU. Mr. Sham will work spring semester 2011 in the studio dedicated for the program at NDSU’s Visual Arts Department, interacting with students, holding public lectures, and opening his studio to visitors.

The focus of Mr. Sham’s work is to create interactions within the public sphere. He is interested in producing and/or setting the stage for specific interpersonal actions, which often lead into mistranslations and unanticipated meanings. This relationship is captured as video, performance, installation, photography, or sculpture. At NDSU, Mr. Sham will teach a seminar course and his residency will culminate with an exhibition and donation of a piece of artwork to the James Rosenquist Artist Residency Collection. Mr. Sham holds a B.A. from Dartmouth College and an M.F.A. from Virginia Commonwealth University. He has taught at Rice University, Houston, TX; and is a visiting critic at the University of Houston. His work has been exhibited at the Asian Arts Initiative, Philadelphia, PA; Kim Foster Gallery, New York, NY; Kunstprojects, Berlin, Germany; Appetite Gallery, Buenos Aires, Argentina; and the Northwest Film Forum, Seattle, WA, to name a few. In addition to the James Rosenquist Residency award, Mr. Sham has been awarded graduate fellowship awards, the Wolfenden Fine Arts Award, Dartmouth College; and a Phi Kappa Phi Scholarship, Virginia Commonwealth University.

NDSU introduced the James Rosenquist Artist in Residency Program in 2006 with its inaugural artist, Hedi Schwobel, of Ludwigburg, Germany. One of her artistic installations included sculpted salt blocks placed in area pastures with cattle near Casselton and Leonard, N.D. The second artist in residence, sculptor Jonathan Pellitteri, used his experience as a mason and carpenter to create artwork that included various mediums and processes representing his observations of the world around him. The 2009 artist in residence, Min Kim Park, explored issued revolving around gender, ethnicity and identity using multimedia performances. Last year’s artist, Michael Namkung, used video to capture kinesthetic drawing experiments that use the physicality of ones body as the medium.

Artists participating in the residency program often integrate NDSU students and community members into the artistic process while in Fargo.

“The thriving Rosenquist Artist in Residency Program has brought international artists to campus over the past three years, providing additional learning options for NDSU students, as well as high school students, alongside activities with the regional arts community,” said Philip Boudjouk, vice president for research, creative activities and technology transfer, which funds the program.

NAMKUNG NAMED JAMES ROSENQUIST ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

January 4, 2010 – Fargo, N.D. – The Department of Visual Arts at North Dakota State University has announced that Michael Namkung, San Francisco, CA., has been named the 2010 James Rosenquist Artist in Residence at NDSU. Mr. Namkung will work spring semester 2010 in the studio dedicated for the program at NDSU’s Downtown Visual Arts Department, interacting with students, holding public lectures and opening his studio to visitors.

Michael Namkung performs kinesthetic drawing experiments that use the physicality of his body as the medium. An amateur athlete, he uses his training regiment to inform his creative research, which he defines as, “an exploration of what happens when the activity of drawing is infused with the language of athletic training.” Through video, performance, installation, and audience participation, Namkung investigates questions of process, materiality and perception, specifically in terms to their relationship to the body. At NDSU, Mr. Namkung will teach a seminar course and the residency will culminate with an exhibit and donation of a piece of artwork to the James Rosenquist Artist Residency Collection. Mr. Namkung holds a B.A. in historyand a M.Ed. in teaching from the University of California at Santa Barbara, and an M.F.A. in drawing and painting from San Francisco State University. He has taught at the Center for Elders and Youth in the Arts, San Francisco, CA; San Francisco State University; and the Richmond Art Center, Richmond, CA. His work has been exhibited at the San Francisco State University Fine Arts Gallery, the LAB, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and the POW! POW! Action Art Festival. In addition to the James Rosenquist Residency award, Mr. Namkung has been awarded several graduate fellowship awards and the Jack and Gertrude Murphy Fellowship in the Fine Arts, San Francisco, CA.
