Statistical evaluation of livestock and meat judging on student performance. Nutritive value and meat yield evaluation of North Dakota game species.

David Buchanan

David Buchanan is Professor Emeritus of Animal Science at both Oklahoma State University and North Dakota State University and Associate Dean Emeritus of the College of Agriculture, Food Systems and Natural Resources at NDSU. He also served as the Head of the NDSU Department of Animal Sciences. Dr. Buchanan was born in Fargo and graduated from NDSU in 1975. After that, he completed his M.S. and PhD in Animal Breeding and Genetics at the University of Nebraska. From 1980 to 2007, he was on the faculty of Oklahoma State University where he, when he finished, was the Graduates of Distinction Professor of Animal Science. He has also been Chair of the OSU Faculty Council and is a Past-President of the American Society of Animal Science. He has won Teaching Awards from the American Society of Animal Science (for which he was also named as a Fellow), the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture and the USDA. He was also named as the NDSU Blue Key Distinguished Educator.

Russ Danielson

Dr. Anna T. Grazul-Bilska

Dr. Anna T. Grazul-Bilska is a distinguished scientist and educator with a Ph.D. in Reproductive Physiology. With extensive experience in both research and teaching, her work has focused on reproduction, embryology, endocrinology, assisted reproductive technologies, and biotechnology. Dr. Grazul-Bilska’s research has explored ovarian, uterine, and placental functions, gap junctions, angiogenesis, and wound healing, primarily using domestic animal models. Her research often bridges the gap between basic and applied science, with implications for both human and animal reproductive health. She has mentored and advised numerous undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and early-career faculty. Dr. Grazul-Bilska has served on multiple editorial boards and as a reviewer for national (NIH, USDA, NSF), international, and local funding agencies, as well as more than 80 scientific journals. She received approximately 50 research grants, totaling nearly $3 million in funding from federal and local agencies. She has published nearly 150 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and 300 abstracts. She was a speaker at numerous scientific conferences and has collaborated with researchers from around the globe. Dr. Grazul-Bilska worked for 33 years in the Department of Animal Sciences, beginning as a post-doctoral fellow in 1986 and retiring as a full professor in 2019.

Dr. JW Schroeder, Ph.D.

Dairy Specialist

Dr. JW (Jerome) Schroeder retired in 2016 after 42 years with the NDSU Extension Service including several county agent appointments before joining the faculty in the Department of Animal Sciences. JW Schroeder held a 60:40 extension-research appointment and taught the dairy production class for several years.

Leadership:

Statewide - ND Dairy Coalition, ND Dairy Diagnostic program, ND Dairy Diagnostic Advisory Team Program, Dairy Cow College educational series and maintained a dairy production web site. Planned and implemented the annual ND Dairy Convention, co-founded the ND Dairy Coalition, contributing member to the Dairy Summit Action Committee, Dairy Strategic Planning Task Force and advisor to Milk Producers Association of ND and ND State Dairy Show Association, including exhibition manager.

National and regional: I-29 5-State Extension Dairy Consortium, scientific advisor to the Midwest Dairy Association, DAIReXNET Community of Practice, High Plains Intermountain Center for Agricultural Health and Safety (HICAHS), Midwest Branch - American Dairy Science Association Extension Program Planning Committee, Heart of America DHIA, Western Dairy Conference and NRC dairy research committee.

Research Program:

Focused on effect of physical form and digestibility, ruminal biohydrogenation of fatty acids, ruminal protein degradability and optimizing feeding levels in the diet of lactating dairy cows. Combined extension and research grant proposals totaled $1,876,224.

Publications:
Authored, co-authored supporting author to 13 scientific journal papers, 36 scientific journal abstracts, 8 proceedings, 16 technical reports and 75 other fact sheets, circulars, proceedings, user guides, workbooks, and one video.

Invited speaker:
International - Expo Leche San Marcos (2013), Aguascalientes, Mexico. National – World Dairy Expo, Madison Wisconsin (2015).
