Records within the Department of Animal Sciences at NDSU date the university’s involvement in livestock judging at the national level to possibly as far as 1905. Historians credit former university president J.H. Shepperd with designing the format of modern livestock judging contests – 12 placings classes and eight sets of oral reasons. In 1960, NDSU won the National Collegiate Livestock Judging Contest, bringing home the famed “Bronze Bull” as well as finishing as Reserve National Champions in 1970.
Those interested in livestock judging should enroll in ANSC 130, Foundations of Livestock and Product Evaluation as first or second-year students, and ANSC 231, Livestock Evaluation, during the fall semester of their third year. Students may receive credit for their involvement with the livestock judging team when enrolled in ANSC 331, Competitive Livestock Evaluation.
