Challey Institute launches IDEAS Research Workshop

The Challey Institute for Global Innovation and Growth is launching the IDEAS Research Workshop to explore interdisciplinary solutions for enhancing economic opportunity.

The workshop will consist of eight research seminars by internationally-renowned scholars from universities across the country. Speakers will present research and engage with the NDSU community on issues related to institutions, trade, entrepreneurship and innovation.

Seminars are scheduled every other Friday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Attendees may participate in-person in the Barry Hall Mezzanine or online through Zoom.

“The Challey Institute IDEAS workshop will enrich the research landscape at NDSU by providing students and faculty the opportunity to learn from and discuss ideas with a broad range of experts,” said Clay Routledge, professor of management and Challey Institute faculty scholar.

Routledge is teaching a new one-credit course focused on the IDEAS workshop. The course, BUSN 491/690, is open to all undergraduate and graduate students.

“I believe the workshop will help promote a culture of interdisciplinary collaborative research here at NDSU regarding issues that are critical to the economic success and growth of our region,” said Routledge.

The first seminar is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 28, at 1:30 p.m. Matthew Clancy, assistant teaching professor in the Agricultural Entrepreneurship Initiative at Iowa State University, will present the paper, “The Case for Remote Work.”

Additional seminars are scheduled for:

• Sept. 11: Edward Timmons, professor of economics and director of the Knee Center for the Study of Occupational Regulation, St. Francis University

• Sept. 25: James Caton, assistant professor of economics and faculty fellow in the Center for the Study of Public Choice and Private Enterprise, NDSU

• Oct. 9: Wenhong Chen, associate professor of media studies and sociology, University of Texas at Austin

• Oct. 23: Bradford Wilcox, director of the National Marriage Project and professor of sociology, University of Virginia

• Nov. 6: Rajshree Agarwal, professor of entrepreneurship and director of the Ed Snider Center for Enterprise and Markets, University of Maryland

• Nov. 20: Jan Pfister, senior lecturer of accounting and finance at Turku School of Economics and research fellow in the House of Innovation, Stockholm School of Economics

• Dec. 4: Adam Thierer, senior research fellow in the Mercatus Center, George Mason University

The Sheila and Robert Challey Institute for Global Innovation and Growth aims to advance understanding in the areas of innovation, trade and institutions to identify policies and solutions that enhance economic growth and opportunity.
