NDSU’s Sheila and Robert Challey Institute for Global Innovation and Growth is scheduled to host “A Conversation with Sam Peltzman” Thursday, Sept. 15, at 4 p.m. in Richard H. Barry Hall.
The event is free to attend and open to the public. Peltzman, the Ralph and Dorothy Keller Distinguished Service Professor of Economics Emeritus at the University of Chicago, will speak in the Louise S. Barry Auditorium at NDSU’s Barry Hall.
The event will begin with a question-and-answer discussion about government regulation and its unintended consequences, current public policy issues and Peltzman’s experiences in higher education and on the President’s Council of Economic Advisers. The conversation will be moderated by John Bitzan, Menard Family Director of the Challey Institute.
“As someone who has studied regulation, I have always had a great deal of admiration for Sam Peltzman and his work,” said Bitzan. “He is one of the world’s leading economic thinkers, and his insights into a variety of issues should be of interest to anyone in our community.”
After the presentation, Peltzman will answer questions from the audience. A reception is set to follow at 5:30 p.m. with light hors d’oeuvres and networking.
Participants do not need to register to attend in person. Virtual attendance is available on Zoom, though you must pre-register.
Peltzman’s research has uncovered important insights about the relationship between the public sector and the private economy. He has studied issues related to regulation, automobile safety, pharmaceutical innovation, banking and public education.
He is the author or editor of several books, including “Political Participation and Government Regulation” and “The Deregulation of Network Industries: What’s Next.”
He was senior staff economist for the President’s Council of Economic Advisers and is the director emeritus of the George J. Stigler Center for the Study of the Economy and the State at the University of Chicago.
The presentation will kick off the Challey Institute’s Menard Family Distinguished Speaker Series for 2022-2023. The series invites world thought leaders to share their ideas with the NDSU community on big questions that explore ways to improve the human condition and create economic opportunity. Other fall speakers include energy and technology expert Mark Mills on Nov. 2 and serial entrepreneur Magatte Wade on Nov. 30.
The Sheila and Robert Challey Institute for Global Innovation and Growth aims to advance understanding in the areas of innovation, trade, institutions and human potential to identify policies and solutions for the betterment of society.
