A panel discussion on the issue of job ethics has been scheduled at NDSU. “Start Your Career Right: The Ethical Responsibilities of Jobseekers,” is set for Thursday, Sept. 29, at 3 p.m. in the Memorial Union’s Anishinaabe Theater.
The event also can be viewed via Zoom.
Panel members will include Jerry South and Becky Bahe of NDSU’s Career and Advising Center, Kurt Lysne of Moore Engineering Inc., Tonya Sirleaf of Health Care Recycling Organization (HERO) and Diane Jones of Magnum Transportation.
The public forum is part of the 2022-2023 “Good Education for a Healthy Democracy: Investing wisely in K-20” project of the Northern Plains Ethics Institute at NDSU.
“Many candidates on the job market make practical and ethical mistakes that hurt their chances of landing or retaining their first job. If these add up, then they risk earning a reputation that could follow them long after the original gaffe,” said Dennis Cooley, Northern plains Institute director and professor of philosophy and ethics. “The panel of local experts will discuss how to successfully navigate these challenges.”
Panel members will discuss:
• Honesty in communication with potential future employers
• How to gracefully decline offers
• How to manage one’s online presence and image
• Trends in employment
• Exploration of an individual’s values and their impact on employment
The panel also will answer questions from the audience, moderated by NDSU student leaders.
The Northern Plains Ethics Institute’s mission is to promote democratic participation in social and ethical issues affecting the Northern Plains and beyond. The institute engages citizens in various discussions focusing on what kind of society they want to live in and how they can create it.
