About Burgum Hall

Located on the corner of 12th Avenue North and University Drive and tucked between the campus's most beautiful gardens and lush, large trees, Burgum’s location provides quick access to the University library, and the Memorial Union which houses the Union Market (opening Fall 2025), the NDSU food court, the University Bookstore, Caribou Coffee, One-Stop student services, and more. Burgum is also within a few minutes’ walk to the local Loaf N Jug gas station, Jimmy John's, Herd and Horns, and Bison Nutrition.

When you walk through the doors at Burgum Hall for the first time, you are transformed into a Burgum Bella! Bellas are sisterly--they respect one another, support each other as they figure out life as a college student, and encourage each other to excel academically. Bella's staff and residents promote and maintain a harmonious, tight-knit community where each resident can be herself, and everyone feels included. Bella residents are all individual leaders within our building and become fully invested in experiencing all the hall has to offer during their time here.

Meet the Burgum Hall Director

Henry Gehrig

Hello there! My name is Henry Gehrig, and I serve as the Hall Director for Burgum Hall. I was born in Bellevue, Washington, but I’ve lived in North Dakota for most of my life. I recently graduated Summa Cum Laude from North Dakota State University with my Bachelor of Science in Social Science Education, and I intend to pursue a Master's in Psychology masters, with long-term plans for a doctorate. I have a passion for development: I’ve worked at a range of roles focused on education and youth in my professional career, such as a daycare aide, summer nanny, camp counselor, resident assistant, and licensed educator in North Dakota - so safe to say I’m stoked to be a Hall Director at NDSU!

When I am out of my office, I’m usually finding ways to decorate for Halloween or playing video games. I also love Star Wars, cooking, and exploring nature whenever I can (I’m a big fan of the rain, it’s in my blood). When I am in my office, I will happily listen and assist students and staff in any way I can. I believe strongly in the power of positive community, and my goal is to ensure that everyone in Burgum Hall feels included, supported, and empowered to grow during their time here at NDSU. I bring peace, freedom, justice, and security to my new residence hall. So please, come by my office or contact me if you require anything at all. I’m ready to help. Go Bison!

History

Built in 1962, the new female dormitory opened on campus for 180 female students. The students could choose between double and triple rooms with built-in vanity desks. The residents faced strict rules, as one mandated that all drapes be drawn by 7:00 pm. The new dormitory was dedicated as Jessamine Slaughter Burgum Hall in honor of Jessamine Slaughter, the first female student at NDSU (then NDAC).

Jessamine Slaughter (Burgum) was the first woman to enroll at the North Dakota Agricultural College after receiving a scholarship from Burleigh County. Having the new women's dormitory named for her was the second time a building was to be named for Burgum. She nearly had Ceres Hall named for her in 1910, but members of the Board of Education and the NDAC Board of Trustees feared that students would refer to the building as "Slaughter House" rather than "Slaughter Hall."
