We explore the effect of intensive management practices on soil and plant microbiomes in agricultural systems.
Microbiomes are the drivers of ecosystem functioning, delivering services like nutrient cycling, organic matter decomposition, soil aggregate stabilization, and beneficial interactions with crops. Thus, understanding the impact of agricultural intensification on microbial communities is important for the productivity and sustainability of agroecosystems. We use traditional and next-generation tools to interrogate the role of microbial communities in agroecosystem processes under a changing global climate. We ultimately seek to harness the power of microbiomes through tailored management practices.
